Why Buying Local Produce Matters: Supporting the Earth and Your Community
In an age of global shipping and fast delivery, it’s easy to forget where our food comes from. A banana from South America, tomatoes from Mexico, and cheese from Europe—our grocery stores offer it all. But what’s the real cost of that convenience?
At The Territory Farm & Goats, we believe that going local isn’t just a trend—it’s a powerful choice that can benefit both the planet and our neighbors. This benefit can be seen through the lowering of individual carbon footprints, strengthening local economies, and knowing exactly where your produce is being grown, and the people who raise it.
Lowering Your Carbon Footprint
Food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles before it lands on your plate. That means burning fossil fuels in planes, ships, and trucks—just to deliver something you could find down the road.
When you buy locally grown and raised food, there are fewer transportation emissions released, less refrigeration and packaging required, and reducing the demand for energy-intensive, long-haul demands.
Strengthening Local Economies
When you buy from local farms and producers, more of your money stays in your community. Studies show that local businesses recirculate a greater share of every dollar as they create jobs, buy supplies, and support other local services.
On our farm, that support means being able to partner with local businesses and organizations for the creation and distribution of products. A local organization our farm supports and works with is FFA. Many times FFA members are able to use labor on our farm to complete volunteer hours, on the job shadowing, and even creation or completion of SAE projects.
You’re not just buying food—you’re investing in your neighbors and community.
Knowing Your Food and Farmer
With local food, you don’t have to guess how it was grown or raised. You can ask. You can visit. You can taste the difference.
At The Territory Farm & Goats, we raise our goats on open pasture, without unnecessary antibiotics or hormones. We grow our produce with sustainable methods that prioritize soil health and animal welfare. And we’re proud to show you how.
That level of transparency builds trust—and that trust creates stronger, healthier communities.
Whether you visit us at the farmers market or work with us in other forms, you know you are getting fresh, local-grown produce!
Thank you for supporting local. Thank you for supporting us.
